Ljubljana Marshes Tour

Ljubljana Marshes is an area of outstanding natural heritage, where many cultures have left their mark, including the pile dwellers and the ancient Romans.

The tour begins with an hour long multimedia presentation in ‘Cankarjev dom’ in Vrhnika. It features general information about the origin, settlement, geography, geology and hydrology of the Ljubljana Marshes. The presentation is followed by sightseeing:

  • Mali plac (a nature reserve; the area has a special recognition as the southernmost bog in Europe and is home to many endangered plants and animals)
  • Jurčevo šotišče (Jurca Peat Bog; one of the last remnants of peat on the Ljubljana marshes) and
  • Kuclerjev kamnolom (Kucler Quarry; a natural geological monument; it is protected due to its unique tectonic and paleontological characteristics; its rock is black limestone)

The tour takes about three hours, but it can be adapted to your wishes.
